Department of Justice Joins Legal Challenge to Stop California's Congressional Map
The US Justice Department has officially joined a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, seeking to block the state's recently passed electoral boundaries.
This court case, filed in federal court, challenges the map supported by the state's Democratic governor, which was developed in reaction against a GOP redistricting effort in Texas.
"The state's redistricting scheme represents a blatant attempt to seize control that violates voting rights and undermines the electoral system," stated the US attorney general.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will survive court challenges.
"These opponents lost at the ballot box and soon they will also lose in court," commented a representative for the governor.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit asserts that California's map wrongfully utilized racial considerations to heavily favor Hispanic voters in contravention of the federal constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a substitute to advance political interests, but that is exactly what the state legislature did with the redistricting measure," stated a senior official from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
This courtroom confrontation constitutes the most significant counterpunch by the Democratic party in the continuing redistricting war that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
In contrast to elsewhere, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed voter approval, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
The Democratic party need to flip just a small number of Republican-held House seats to gain majority of the House of Representatives in next year's congressional elections.
The party that holds the majority will influence the remaining period of the current administration, deciding if a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its political program or encounter opposition, investigations and potential additional obstacles.
