EU Could Respond to ‘Unjustified’ US Visa Bans, Spokesperson Says

The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US on five European individuals involved in combating digital hatred and misinformation, an EU official has said.

European Leaders Decry US Move as ‘Intimidation’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron accused the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, after the visa restrictions targeted figures who have been central to efforts to enact laws governing US-based technology firms.

“For far too long, European activists have led coordinated campaigns to pressure American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “This government will not stand for such actions of extraterritorial censorship.”

Broad Criticism From EU Nations

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined France in criticizing the decision.

The restrictions were enacted this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s Digital Services Act (DSA), as well as several activists fighting false information, including Germany and the United Kingdom.

A Deepening Dispute Regarding Governance

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to combat hate speech and falsehoods.

This row threatens to become part of a far wider ongoing political and ideological clash involving Washington and Europe.
