Fed Cuts Borrowing Costs for Second Time This Year During Financial Instability

The United States central bank reduced interest rates on Wednesday, marking the second rate cut in the current year during financial volatility originating from the federal government shutdown and trade duties.

Move Arrives at Unprecedented Time for Central Bank

The move to cut the key rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under significant strain to cut rates despite persistent inflation.

Fed Statement Notes Job Market Shifts

In a statement, the Federal Reserve said that the unemployment rate had increased but stays modest. “Job gains have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Hinders Fed’s Job

The ongoing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the BLS are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Impacts Monetary Moves

The Fed usually studies labor statistics to assess labor market conditions, including the number of new jobs added to the economy and the current jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was published in early September, before the closure, and gave a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the jobs market in August.

The number of jobs created to the market in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and unemployment rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.

Private Data Indicate Continued Slowdown

Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s employment data in early October, it halted its publication when the closure started. Employment data company ADP indicated recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand positions in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is continuing to slow.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined significantly,” central bank head the Fed chairman said earlier this month, which he had previously said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Price Data Shows Gradual Increase

Though BLS’s jobs report has been suspended, the agency still issued its price statistics for last month that indicated that costs are going up, albeit slowly. Costs rose 3% over the past twelve months, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since three years ago. The Fed’s target inflation rate is 2%.
