Greek Police Boost Security After Demonstrations Targeting Israel Passenger Liner
Hellenic officials have significantly increased security measures at two key ports in an initiative to prevent demonstrators from targeting a cruise liner carrying visitors from Israel on an 11-day voyage around the Mediterranean.
Recent Demonstrations Trigger Increased Security
The security reinforcement at Patras and Katakolo followed previous protests when the cruise vessel made port in Kalamata earlier this week. Previously, passengers aboard the same vessel were prevented from disembarking and the ship was forced to divert to Cyprus after community members organized demonstrations on the Aegean isle of Syros.
"In spite of the peace agreement, Israel is still continuing its military operations in Gaza," commented a schoolteacher who participated in the Kalamata rally. "Civilian, unarmed civilians are being killed."
Passenger Experience and Public Opinion
From the upper deck, travelers witnessed as crowds in Kalamata shouted: "You need the authorities, you're not wanted in Greece."
Yannis Sifanakis, who spent the summer organizing anti-conflict rallies throughout Greece, stated: "Israeli visitors who support the policies of their administration aren't embraced here."
International Background and Diplomatic Ties
Constantine Filis clarified: "Because of geographic proximity and our longstanding relationships with the Middle East, the ordinary Greek person is more sensitive to what is transpiring in Gaza than the typical citizen of central or northern Europe."
"Greece is in a challenging situation," he continued. "Israel is much more important for us as an ally than it is for the majority of European countries."
Commercial and Tourism Implications
National figures indicate that in excess of 600,000 Israeli travelers traveled to Greece in 2024, with projections of even higher numbers this year. This considerable inflow underscores the much-improved relationship between the two nations since the 1980s, when Greek governments maintained a staunchly pro-Palestinian stance.
Tactical Alliance and Regional Factors
For the Greek government, Israel constitutes not only a significant counterbalance to geopolitical adversary Turkey but also provides the supplementary bonus of better official channels to Washington.
"Greece is not going to risk its ties with Israel," stated the analyst. "However from a compassionate viewpoint we must be more embracing, more balanced, more determined to reveal the misdeeds of Israel in Gaza."
Growing Demonstration Campaign and Global Reaction
The extent of the Greek demonstration campaign has surprised Israeli authorities. Recently, the country's foreign ministry counseled visitors to maintain a low profile, while domestic press characterized Athens as a "former paradise" due to anti-Israeli graffiti emerging on edifices in the city center.
Victor Eliezer of the Central Board of Jewish Communities in Greece expressed concern: "Certainly we're anxious. The sort of rhetoric we're hearing can so easily become discriminatory."
Future Developments and Requests
Gradually, opponents have targeted Athens' tight relationships with Israel. Up to 5,000 people lately went to Crete to request the shutdown of the Souda Bay naval installation, a NATO facility that after the commencement of conflict in Gaza has functioned as a important supply station for US military ships, fighter planes and boats destined for Israel.
"There have been victories," announced a movement organizer. "Our main demand, now, is to cease all cooperation with Israel."
