Weight management often requires long-term strategies.

A recent study reveals that individuals who stop using popular GLP-1 drugs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on shed pounds far faster than those who end conventional diet and exercise plans.

Findings released in a prominent health publication demonstrates that while obese people can lose a large proportion of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass is regained at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month once they quit.

"People buying these treatments need to be aware of the risk of quick rebound weight gain when the medication ends," stated lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.

That rate of recovery implies a reversion to original mass in about one and a half years.

Comparing Approaches

The research, which reviewed dozens of studies involving thousands of patients, compared the results of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.

Researchers emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting generally experience a more gradual creep back—around 100 grams monthly—after stopping.

Understanding the Rapid Regain

Nutrition scientists believe the way of the jabs explains the heightened regain.

The injections mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate hunger.

"Long-term administration of GLP-1 levels far above than the body's typical production may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition specialist.

"Withdrawal of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating far more likely."

An Ongoing Issue?

Medical guidelines advise the injections for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians contend that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the treatment should be considered ongoing.

This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "underscore the persistent nature of obesity," akin to managing conditions like high blood pressure.

User Experiences

Users who have come off the medication report a sudden resurgence of hunger.

"I experienced something flipping and I was suddenly extremely hungry," said an individual.

The struggle is worsened if individuals have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.

Significant Adoption

Figures indicate that millions of people in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is higher among females compared to males.
  • The middle-aged demographic shows the greatest usage rates.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.

Finally, clinicians caution that while the jabs are effective agents for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and lasting health benefits likely depends on combined lifestyle management.
